129. No Adult Supervision: AI Harnesses, Mining Stats, and Digital Security Theater - E129
In this episode, we flew without adult supervision and covered a wide range of territory, starting with reviving old hardware and ending with the future of Bitcoin, mining, and digital sovereignty. We talked about breathing new life into a 5K Intel iMac with Linux, the growing excitement around AI-native Linux environments, and eco’s early journey into self-hosting AI on a Mac Mini. A big part of the conversation focused on the difference between models, harnesses, and agents, and how these tools are quickly becoming essential for development work, including open-source Bitcoin and mining projects. We also dug into the tradeoffs between self-hosted AI and frontier subscription models, plus the security implications of increasingly powerful AI-assisted tooling.
From there, we shifted into the darker side of the digital world: broken identity systems, security theater, data breaches, and the growing fragility of centralized financial and authentication infrastructure. That naturally led us back to why Bitcoin matters, both as a tool for sovereignty and as something that still needs better usability and stronger open-source infrastructure. We wrapped with network stats, a look at mining pool centralization, some exciting updates around the 256 Foundation, a shoutout to our donation pool hashers, and a preview of the Proto rig headed our way. We also highlighted the importance of open-source mining firmware, the momentum behind Mujina, and why opening up the mining stack remains one of the most important jobs in Bitcoin.
